Our History

Celebrating over 90 years of service to the community, Colonel William Allen Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1925 by Mrs. S.M. Russell in Smithfield, Virginia.

Behind the Name

In 1665, Arthur Allen built a brick house known as Bacon’s Castle in Surry, Virginia. It is the oldest documented brick dwelling in the United States and is noted as an extremely rare example of Jacobean architecture in the New World. Colonel William Allen is a descendant of Arthur Allen. William served as a colonel in the Revolutionary War and inherited “Claremont Manor” in Surry, said to be a replica of the royal residence at Claremont, England, the birthplace of Queen Victoria.
