Our History

Celebrating over 95 years of service to the community, Fort Maiden Spring Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1924 by Ms. Virginia Holmes Greever in Tazewell, Virginia.

Behind the Name

The Fort Maiden Spring Chapter was named in honor of a stockade begun in 1773 by Rees Bowen in present day Tazewell County, Virginia. This stockade was the second one in the region, and was built near a spring of unusual boldness and volume, flowing from a cavern at the base of a huge limestone cliff. This site was named Maiden Spring. Folklore said that a frontiersman killed a young doe at this spring and named the spring in honor of this “maiden denizen of the forest.” Maiden Spring was also the home of Rees Bowen and these lands are still in the same family today.

Rees Bowen, a nineteenth-century congressman, magistrate and judge, served in the Virginia House of Delegates from 1863 to 1865 and was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1872, serving from 1873 to 1875. Bowen died at his estate called "Maiden Spring" in Tazewell County, Virginia on August 29, 1879.
